Ocular lesions of onchocerciasis.

چکیده
THIS paper aims at describing, illustrating, and interpreting the ocular lesions associated with onchocerciasis. The literature of onchocerciasis already includes many pictures of the ocular lesions. The paintingst and diagrams in this paper supplement those previously published and are intended to fill gaps in the existing literature. The accompanying text expresses the author's views on the interpretation of the lesions and refers to alternative opinions. Particular attention is paid to the choroido-retinal lesions because they have been the subject of much controversy. It is hoped that the paper as a whole will assist workers in the field to distinguish and understand the lesions of onchocerciasis.

Natural history of onchocerciasis.
Since the first description of ocular onchocerciasis in Africa was published (Hissette, 1931) many records have been made of the ocular lesions (e.g. Bryant, 1935; Hissette, 1938; Toulant and Boithias, 1952a, 1952b, 1954; World Health Organization Regional Conference on Onchocerciasis, 1956). However, no detailed account has been written of the progress of ocular signs and visual acuity in an u...

Trends in prevalence rates of onchocercal ocular lesions were examined over the period 1980 to 1990 using data from two cross-sectional surveys. There was evidence for increasing prevalence of anterior chamber microfilariae, iridocyclitis, optic atrophy, and chorioretinopathy. Large increases in prevalence, in particular, were seen for posterior segment lesions: optic atrophy increased from 2.7...

Onchocerciasis results from infestation by the nematode Onchocerca volvulus and is characterized by troublesome itching, skin lesions, and eye manifestations. Although partially controlled by international mass prevention programs, onchocerciasis remains a major health hazard and is endemic in Africa, Arabia, and the Americas. Onchocerciasis is spread by bites from infested black flies, which t...
متن کاملExperimental ocular onchocerciasis in cynomolgus monkeys. IV. Chorioretinitis elicited by Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae.
Onchocerciasis is a major cause of blindness worldwide, and much of the blindness is caused by onchocercal chorioretinitis. In an experimental animal model for ocular onchocerciasis, intravitreal injections of 10,000 live Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae isolated from infected humans into the eyes of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) resulted in patchy, progressive loss of retinal pigme...
متن کاملOcular onchocerciasis.
ONCHOCERCIASIS is caused by infection with the adult filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus; the microfilariae of this worm develop in the body of man and sometimes penetrate the tissues of the eye where they set up pathological changes leading to blindness; embryos may also be found in the skin, in lymph glands, in the fluid of hydroceles, and in effusions into joints. The disease has been reported...
